Tony and Irene Crowther came across D&M Homes when they saw a new house being built locally that they liked the look of; so they knocked on the door to find out who was delivering the project and got a great recommendation for D&M Homes.
They took a big risk in buying a plot of land, in the village they loved, but without the benefit of any previous planning approval. It was also outside the village Settlement boundary, adjacent to a Roman road and within an AONB; but it was a worth a challenge to assist our clients with their dream home.
As the site was in a prominent location on the edge of the village, careful consideration had to be given on the potential impact that the property would have on the adjacent dwellings and that it would fit in with the vernacular style.
To assist in minimising the impact of the dwelling on the plot, the design showed varying ridge heights which separated the dwelling into smaller elements. One of the client’s requirements was for a sitting area with an abundance of light which was enhanced with a feature traditional roof lantern.
Because of the nature of the planning application, we identified a Planning Consultant and Archaeologist with local experience to assist with supporting our bespoke design and following a successful appeal, planning was granted.
Using the D&M Homes network of contractors, the tender process identified several who were local to the site but that could also demonstrate their skill in using natural stone. Once the quotes were received, D&M arranged for the clients to visit numerous reference sites before appointing their chosen builder. During the build, Tony, being a semi-retired RAF Pilot was able to manage the other specialist trades that were employed.
Externally, we supplied local Cotswold stone with architectural dressings, natural slates and bespoke fully finished flush fitting traditional windows.
Although the original programme was extended, from starting on site to moving in, the project took just over a year and the completed home is a testament to great design and craftsmanship.
“D&M Homes were on hand right up until the day we moved in, and even guided me through the VAT claim at the end”.
