Choosing your windows

Our Designer Beverley discusses the importance of choosing the right windows for your design

Along with roof and external wall finishes, the choice of windows is an important decision for those building their own home. If you are building a period design for example Georgian, that decision is probably made for you as all-bar sliding sash windows (see top image opposite) are the natural choice. For contemporary / modern designs the most popular choice is aluminium, either all aluminium or composite i.e. aluminium outside and timber inside. If the budget is tight Slimline PVCu in a modern colour like slate grey can be very effective. Depending on the design genre other options are traditional casement, cottage bar and plain (non-bar) sash windows. Again if the budget is tight but you like the look of sash windows then you could consider top hung ‘lookalike’ sash windows. Our Materials Manager Dan will happily cost the various options for you. Incidentally if you do opt for traditional casement windows I suggest you specify ‘balanced sashes’ – for the minimal extra cost they look much better. Whatever the house design style, the choice of windows is something I always consider carefully in discussion with my clients.
